A Nick Davidson Explosion Sparks Victory

Clemson shook off a bit of a slow start to eventually dispatch of Boston College on Tuesday night in Littlejohn. Clemson fans were treated to what made Nick Davidson such a sought after transfer as he had the entire arsenal on display during an incredible 21-9 personal run against the Eagles. Davidson got going with one of his hook shot moves before getting hot from the 3 point arc, punishing the Eagles for sagging off the high/low actions. He even got loose for a dunk down the lane during this stretch.

BC looked like they might be ready to put up a fight early on with some uncharacteristically good 3 point shooting out of the gate, making 3 of their first 4 attempts. However, the Clemson defense started to steadily force turnovers and also get BC depending on one on one basketball to finish the first half up 37-27 despite just 2 minutes of action from team leader RJ Godfrey due to foul trouble. Jestin Porter had a similarly quiet night on offense but the Tigers continued to flex their impressive depth to create a very lopsided bench point differential.

The second half was less Davidson and more RJ Godfrey inside, with some Carter Welling mixed in. Butta Johnson knocked down a corner three pointer to beat the BC press after Godfrey was fed for a baseline dunk against the zone adjustment from former Clemson assistant Earl Grant. The Tigers were also able to get BC’s primary big men Hastings and Kapke in foul trouble, eventually fouling both of them out. BC had no answers on offense beyond guard Fred Payne who led the Eagles with 20 points and was their only double figure scorer. Clemson locked up returning leading scorer Donald Hand, Jr. who finished with 0 points on just 0-3 shooting in 31 minutes.

Ryan Kantor got his wish as the Tigers held BC under 60 points! Davidson finished with a season high 25 points, while Carter Welling and RJ Godfrey finished with 10 each to amplify the paint dominance for Clemson. The Tigers forced 19 BC turnovers while winning the battle on the glass 35-30 and posting a positive 12-10 assist to turnover ratio. Now Clemson awaits a visit from the 15-2 Miami Hurricanes on Saturday, which will be a battle of teams currently undefeated in the ACC. The Canes are coming off an 81-69 victory at Notre Dame and will be a Quad 1 level game.
