UNC remained undefeated in Chapel Hill this season with an 89-82 win over Virginia Tech Saturday night. The Hokies kept things close before Carolina was able to put them away late for the Tar Heels’ third straight win.
The game was tied 44-44 at halftime with both teams shooting better than 50% from the field in the first 20 minutes. Jonathan Powell had an outstanding first half with 12 points to lead the Heels. UNC was a little careless with the ball, turning it over eight times in the first half, leading to 12 points for the Hokies. Henri Veesaar dominated the second half with 18 of his 26 points to tie his career high. He had seven boards and made two threes. Seth Trimble was also great with 20 points. Powell finished the game with 15 points and Zayden High rounded out the Tar Heels in double figures with 12. High went a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.

They also shot 40% from long distance and an improved 77% from the free throw line. The Heels picked a good night to make their free throws, as they attempted 30 of them and made 23. Committing a ton of fouls against Carolina hasn’t been the worst strategy this year, but Virginia Tech was made to pay for it tonight.
With NC State losing to Notre Dame earlier today, the Tar Heels currently find themselves in fourth place in the ACC with two games remaining. That puts them in position for a double bye in the ACC Tournament if they can hang onto it.
UNC will try to put a bow on their undefeated season at home on Tuesday when they welcome Clemson to Chapel Hill for Senior Night.
