The Chargers failed to protect quarterback Justin Herbert last season. Much of their struggles along the offensive line were due to injuries. With the recent retirement of Bradley Bozeman, Zion Johnson slated for free agency, and Mekhi Becton a potential cut candidate, there are several question marks for the unit heading into 2026.

Daniel Popper of The Athletic explained why the Chargers' biggest need is strengthening the offensive line this offseason.

What is the Chargers’ plan along the interior of the offensive line? A lot of my digging in Indianapolis will be geared toward answering this question. They need an upgrade at center over Bradley Bozeman. Left guard Zion Johnson is a pending unrestricted free agent. Right guard Mekhi Becton is a candidate to be cut for cap savings. Are the Chargers in on Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum? If not, who else are they targeting at center in free agency? Are they hoping to re-sign Johnson? What is his market? Are they moving on from Becton? Is finding three new starters on the interior realistic? No quarterback was hit more than Justin Herbert last season. Securing the interior must be a priority for coach Jim Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz.

The Chargers have over $87 million in cap space, giving the team financial flexibility to spend in free agency. However, their search for improvements along the offensive line could also be addressed in the draft.

With Mike McDaniel's arrival in LA, the Chargers should have a high-powered, explosive offense. The offensive line getting reinforcements would only get the Bolts one step closer to making the deep playoff runs fans have been so eager to see.
