Now, with the release of Season 2, Frieren is commonly regarded as one of the best in its genre as well as outside of it, and one would be hard-pressed to find anything that truly compares.
That said, 2026 may have Frieren's successor already lined up in the form of Witch Hat Atelier, which, after countless delays, is finally set to release on April 6, 2026. And while the two series may be fairly different, Witch Hat Atelier might just leave fans pleasantly surprised at how well it scratches the fantasy itch left by Frieren.
Witch Hat Atelier's Anime Looks More Promising Than Ever
One of Frieren's biggest draws is no doubt its gorgeous animation by Madhouse, with its sprawling scenery, picturesque backgrounds, and, of course, its exhilarating fights. It's hard to compete with Frieren in this regard, but it looks like Witch Hat Atelier might just pull it off.
Initially set for release in 2025, Witch Hat Atelier's anime was delayed to improve its quality and better capture the indescribable charm of Kamome Shirahama's manga series. It seems like this bargain more than paid off as Witch Hat Atelier's anime is finally just around the corner, and it looks better and better with every new sneak peek and trailer released.
The anime's latest teasers clearly depict a huge improvement compared to the initial glimpses of the series, and assuming the anime is just as picturesque as the trailers make it out to be, Witch Hat Atelier looks like it might just dethrone Frieren, or at least become its successor in its absence.
Witch Hat Atelier Will Be Frieren's Spiritual Successor
Admittedly, Witch Hat Atelier and Frieren are two very different stories despite their similar fantastical, magical-filled worlds. Frieren is more so a tale of recontextualizing an older adventure through a new one, all from Frieren's unique, yet evolving perspective as an immortal.
Meanwhile, Witch Hat Atelier is a coming-of-age story that is oddly reminiscent of shonen series such as My Hero Academia, with Coco's desire to be a witch in a world where witches are only born, not made.
Even the way the two series approach magic itself could not be more different. In fact, Witch Hat Atelier might even have Frieren beat in this regard with its ambitiously intricate and much more imaginative magic system centered around runes and symbols instead of the conventional mana system.

Coco and Frieren's stories, journeys, and worlds are undeniably different, but equally compelling, with Witch Hat Atelier exuding the same whimsical charm as Frieren. As such, Witch Hat Atelier is more so shaping up to be Frieren's spiritual successor instead of a literal replacement.
With Season 2 of Frieren just a couple of episodes away from concluding, Witch Hat Atelier's release is even perfectly poised to take over in Frieren's absence, as there's no telling whether there will be a third season for now or how long it will take to release.
