It’s been eight years since Sony first began its live-action franchise starring Tom Hardy's Venom. However, a major new update for Marvel's Lethal Protector could see the franchise continuing in a whole new way.

While details are still fairly slim, Sony may have the perfect opportunity to do something pretty bold and exciting with their Venom franchise, a live-action Marvel trilogy that has easily been the most successful outside their Spider-Man movies with Marvel Studios. However, a new update for a future animated project could be an exciting means to ensure that one of Venom's very best stories is adapted correctly.

Sony Pictures Is Developing A New Animated Venom Movie (Tom Hardy Is Involved)

While we don't know much, it's been announced that writers Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein (Final Destination: Bloodlines) will serve as directors and producers for a new animated Venom movie in development. Additionally, the bigger reveal is that live-action Venom actor Tom Hardy is also involved, though it's unclear in what capacity.

Although Hardy could very well just be a producer on this new animated Venom film, it's possible that he could remain the voice of Venom in animation.

Something like that is where the true potential arguably lies, as it's possible an animated Venom movie could pick up the major hanging narrative threads we saw in 2024's Venom: The Last Dance, having teased Andy Serkis as the major big bad Knull, otherwise known as the King in Black.

Could The Animated Venom Movie Be A King In Black Adaptation?

If Sony truly wants to go big, paying off their teases from The Last Dance with an animated King in Black adaptation could be a very bold and exciting route.

The 2020 Marvel Comics event of the same name saw Knull the Symbiote God unleashed and invading Earth with legions of symbiote dragons, motivating a planet-wide defense from multiple Marvel icons and culminating with Eddie Brock's Venom defeating Knull, eventually becoming a new King in Black.

As brutal as it was massive in scale, one could argue that animation could be the better medium to ensure a screen adaptation is as epic as it deserves to be. Furthermore, animation is clearly where Sony has seen great success in recent years, particularly with the animated Spider-Verse films, but also other projects like KPop Demon Hunters.

Regardless of what the story may be, King in Black or otherwise, an animated Venom movie in a similar vein does sound incredibly exciting and a very unique route to continue the franchise.
