Kayce Dutton can't seem to get a break.

Marshals showrunner Spencer Hudnut confirms what happened to Monica Dutton. The Yellowstone franchise is back, this time, as part of CBS's 2025-2026 programming. Luke Grimes' Kayce Dutton returns after the flagship's end, spearheading the first sequel narrative in the universe. Marshals sees John III's youngest starting a new path as a member of the U.S. Marshals, but this move is prompted by a personal tragedy.

In Marshals episode 1, "Piya Wiconi," the CBS show doesn't waste time confirming that Monica is dead. Kayce and Tate are trying to get by, and while the pair has a good relationship, it's clear that they are struggling to move on from losing their matriarch. Throughout the outing, John III is haunted by the demise of his wife, but it isn't until the final moments of the premiere that Marshals allows him to finally fully confront his grief.

In an interview with TVLine, Hudnut confirms the death of Monica and why it is integral to the story of Marshals moving forward. He acknowledges that Kayce's Yellowstone ending was the jumping point for this tragedy, as it seemed too perfect to need a follow-up. Hudnut makes it clear that Monica wasn't always meant to die, but as they developed the narrative, they realized that for the story to be compelling, it had to be her. Read his full quote below:

"Kayce had such a perfect ending in 'Yellowstone,' His dreams had finally come true. As we were trying to figure out how to tell the next chapter in Kayce's story, it felt like he really needed to be shaken out of that. Unfortunately, tragedy tends to find Kayce, so something bad was going to happen for him one way or the other. It just sort of played out that it was going to be Monica."

"To me, Monica is really guiding Kayce through this first episode, trying to help him find his new path. And if you actually break it down, Tate is at that rally to honor his mother, and Kayce goes there to protect Tate. So if not for Monica, Kayce never would have been in that position and may not have found this path. We really wanted to be respectful of the way that we said goodbye to her. I also didn't want to step on the ending of 'Yellowstone,' because what they had was a beautiful ending. Unfortunately, real life intervened."

For context, Yellowstone ended with the sale of the Dutton Ranch back to Broken Rock Indian Reservation, while Kayce and his family were able to stay at East Camp for their homebase. It was the happily-ever-after that the character had always wanted, as he fought hard to not be as involved with the Duttons' drama and only focus on Monica and Tate. So after solving the ranch problem, he had all that in front of him. Unfortunately, he didn't have long to enjoy it.

Monica's death had been heavily hinted throughout Marshals' promotional run. Kelsey Asbille's absence in the cast list was the first major clue about her dark fate, but after that, footage of Kayce visiting a grave as part of the trailers reinforced theories about the death. From a storytelling perspective, it would have been impossible to find a new story for Kayce after Yellowstone without any sort of tragedy that would force him out of his dream life. Still, it might have been a more effective twist if it played out on the screen to kick off Marshals.

Of course, this might be something that Hudnut and his team are planning to do in a later episode. Aside from the confirmation of Monica's demise, Marshals has largely kept the specifics of it under the lid, and it's safe to say that details about it will continue to roll out in the next several weeks, in parallel with both Kayce and Tate dealing with their collective and individual grief. For now, with that tragedy finally confirmed, the show can focus on how John III's youngest is guided by this massive loss.

Marshals airs new episodes every Sunday, 8 PM ET, on CBS.
